Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit

Mario Kart Live was my first professional game development experience. I joined the team at Velan Studios as a programming intern in the summer of 2018, and was hired as a fulltime Gameplay Programmer in December a few months later.

CAUTION: Roadwork Ahead

During the development I was responsible for a handful of key gameplay features. This included powerups, gate variants, race environments, multiplayer, tutorials, and the MK Radio system.

I worked closely with FX artists, sound designers, and animators to meld our world with the karting we all know and love.

Lightning in a bottle

Augmented Reality will always struggle with seamlessly blending the virtual world with ours—the first prototype I played of this game was a kid’s dream come true. I look back fondly on the days spent driving my kart around the office, speeding by coworkers at the lunch table and avoiding the stairs. We didn’t just put Mario in your living room; your living room became Luigi’s Raceway, Moo Moo Meadows…any racing circuit you could dream up!

The game received the Racing Game of the Year award from The 2021 D.I.C.E. Awards
